Poster House First Friday

Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event October 4, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the fall season are Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes and Lester Beall & A New American Identity. Both exhibits will be open through February 23, 2025.

Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions on display. First Friday activities for October 4th include:

 

1:00-7:00 PM: Woodblock Printing Demonstration

Try your hand at woodblock printing! Under the guidance of Sato Yamomoto participants will choose from one of three designs to create. Sato Yamomoto’s art is inspired by diverse cultural sources and includes the use of advanced ambidextrous and ukiyo-e printmaking skills. Cost: $10

 

2:30-4:00 PM: Inclusive HIIT Workout Class with Haven Boxing Gym

Poster House is partnering with Haven Boxing Gym for an inclusive HIIT workout class. Participants will join instructors in the main gallery to learn basic boxing techniques used by some of the sports heroes included in the Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. All experience and fitness levels are welcome. Cost: $10

 

3:30-5:30 PM: Attica2021 Documentary Screening

Join Poster House for a screening of the documentary Attica (2021) by Stanley Nelson and Traci Curry. Presented in conjunction with the capsule exhibition No Escape: The Legacy of Attica Lives!, the film sheds new light on the extreme violence of the prison industrial complex 50 years after the Attica uprisings.

 

6:00-7:00 PM: Pattern-Making Workshop with Zipeng Zhu

Zipeng Zhu, design icon and pattern-maker, will be leading a hands-on pattern workshop where participants will learn to use analog techniques to explore exciting color combinations and patterns inspired by the museum’s new capsule exhibition Fantastical Streets: The Theatrical Posters of Boris Bucan. Supplies will be provided and no preparation is necessary. Cost: $15

 

7:00 – 8:00 PM  A Study in Why We Move

New York-based dancer and choreographer Shira Kagan-Shafman and composer and violinist Leandria Lott will present a performance exploring the question “why do we move?” They will draw from their ongoing collaborations between music and dance.  Their work seeks to provide answers by highlighting the trust needed to move, trust in the body, in the witnesses and in each other.

Free tickets can be reserved online in advance of October 4th. During normal hours, tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students, educators, veterans, and seniors. Poster House offers free museum admission through New York City’s public library Culture Pass system.
