The Big Con: A Conversation with Mariana Mazzucato and Darrick Hamilton

As part of the 2023 Henry Cohen Lecture Series, “Visions of a Post-Neoliberal Future,” the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at The New School is thrilled to host Mariana Mazzucato, economist and professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL) for a discussion with New School Professor Darrick Hamilton surrounding the launch of her new book with political economist and writer, Rosie Collington, on Wednesday April 5 at The New School.
The Big Con: How the Consulting Industry Weakens Our Businesses, Infantilizes Our Governments, and Warps Our Economies, throws back the curtain on the consulting industry; showing us that there is an entrenched relationship between the consulting industry and the way business and government are managed today. Mariana Mazzucato and Rosie Collington illustrate that our economies’ reliance on companies such as McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, and EY stunts innovation, obfuscates corporate and political accountability, and impedes our collective mission of halting climate breakdown. With peerless scholarship, and a wealth of original research, Mazzucato and Collington argue brilliantly for building a new system in which public and private sectors work innovatively for the common good.
“Visions of a Post-Neoliberal Future” brings leading thinkers, changemakers, policymakers, journalists, and activists to The New School to present their perspectives on building an inclusive political economy.
